Sweden got an unexpected jolt as newly appointed Health Minister Elisabet Lann collapsed during a live press conference.
It happened Tuesday, September 9, and it was Lann’s very first day in office.
The 48-year-old politician had barely stepped into her new role when the incident occurred. While listening to another official speak, Lann suddenly leaned forward and lost consciousness, taking down the podium with her. Fellow politicians and journalists rushed to her side, helping her regain composure.
After a tense few moments, Lann returned to the conference and explained what had happened. “This wasn’t exactly a normal Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop,” she told reporters, highlighting that she wasn’t seriously hurt.
The collapse happened in front of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Christian Democrats leader Ebba Busch, making the moment even more startling. She later stepped out briefly but returned a few minutes later, showing resilience under the glare of live cameras.
Lann takes over as Health Minister following Acko Ankarberg Johansson’s resignation. She brings experience as a municipal councilor in the city of Gothenburg and as deputy director of the Cabinet Office. With a master’s in peace and development studies and political science, Lann has spent years navigating Sweden’s complex political landscape.
Despite the dramatic start, she seemed determined to shake off the wobble and step into her new role with focus and determination.
