'Double bonanza': GST reforms to bring relief to poor & middle class from Sept 22, says Modi; highlights from PM’s address

PTIPrime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the nation on the eve of Navratri, the day from when the new GST rate cuts will kick in.

On the eve of a sweeping overhaul of India’s tax regime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the next generation of GST reforms will “accelerate India’s growth story,” ease doing business, and bring relief to the poor and middle class. These GST reforms, announced September 3, are set to take effect on Monday, September 22. In a televised address to the nation, Modi framed the rollout as a historic step, tying it symbolically to the start of Navratri. “From the first day of Navratri, the country is moving a step forward towards atmanirbhar Bharat,” he said, adding that the “GST Bachat Utsav” would begin from September 22. The Prime Minister termed the UPA era tax regime as a ‘complex, fragmented’ one, before GST’s first implementation in 2017, saying that companies faced dozens of levies, endless paperwork, and delays at inter-state checkposts. “If it had to send goods to Hyderabad, 570 km away from Bengaluru, it would prefer sending its goods to Europe, and then to Hyderabad,” he stated, stressing why reforms were necessary. Also read: What can be made in India should be made within India itself, says PM Modi on ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ missionLive Events Calling the rollout a “savings festival” for Indian households, Modi urged people to see the reforms as an opportunity to celebrate. “You will be able to save and buy your favourite products with ease.
