SYSTEM’S ROTTEN

Recommended Videos

Edmonton’s electoral process is garbage. Every election cycle there are so many people running that the eventual “winner” can be elected by less than thirty per cent of the electorate these folks like Sohi, Iveson, etc., then say they were given a mandate. What a farce. We need to change this and have runoffs whereby the top two vote getters have to square off for the win. With less than fifty per cent of eligible voters turning out and then someone gaining office with thirty per cent of the fifty per cent, the contenders pretty well represent nobody. How can this be considered legitimate? If special interests (developers, for instance) want, they can load and financially support any riding they want to split the vote and give the office to the incumbent who has proved to be compliant to their wishes. This is a rotten system and needs to be rethought immediately.

GREGG GUSTAFSON

(The current method is not ideal, but there must be a less cumbersome, less expensive solution.)

NOT SO GREAT

Yes, Mark Carney is a great economist, but not in the way that you think. His record and legacy will be driving Canada to be deadlast in every OECD and G7 measure. Carney’s failures will become a world renowned guide for others as to what not to do. This guide will follow up his book Values with another called Facts. I don’t know how useful this guide will be, as people don’t seem to be able to learn from history these days. Do we still teach history? Of course, the unfortunate part of all of this is that it will come at Canadians’ expense.

(Canadians will keep a close eye on his moves.)

EDUCATION MISDIRECTION

I read Rick Bell’s editorial on the offer on the table by Smith and company to Alberta teachers (Bell: Danielle Smith blasts teachers for ‘barrelling ahead’ to a strike, Sept. 17). This government of Premier Smith so misrepresents the facts in this case that I will not belabour readers with all the government’s wilful misdirections. For example. the 3,000 new teachers to be added in the future are NOT to alleviate the stress of huge classroom sizes but reflects the growth in projected student population.

ABRAM WIEBE

(The government needs to sit down with teachers and hammer this out.)
