Firebrand family lawyer is suspended for calling out 'terrible mother' with 'nightmare children who could not be controlled'

A Colorado family lawyer has been temporarily suspended from practicing law after being accused of several legal lapses including slamming a former client as a ‘terrible mother’ in a blistering Facebook post.

Bernadette Gonzales, the owner of 5280 Family Law in Denver, was hit with a 60 day suspension over a 2020 social media spat she had with former client Michelle Gillett.

The attorney responded with fury after Gillett left a poor review on the 5280 Facebook page, where she called Gonzales a ‘nasty, rude person’ and a ‘horrible lawyer,’ BusinessDen reported.

Gonzales shot back at the review by warning her followers to ‘be careful of this woman and her family’, and accused Gillett of not being able to control her children.

‘She allows her kids to damage other people’s property and then blames everyone else. She does not like hearing the truth about her lack of parenting nor the worthless child she raised,’ Gonzales wrote.

‘Just another dysfunctional family raising entitled children. If she tries to retain you to represent her family, do not take the case. There are many families out there more worthy of attorneys who are truthful and have integrity.’

Gillett slammed the attorney in her response, accusing Gonzales of doing ‘nothing to help’ and questioning: ‘Being a family lawyer this is how you speak?? Calling someone’s child worthless?? Nice.’

The post came under scrutiny from the Colorado Office of Attorney Regulation, which accused Gonzales of revealing confidential client information and violating her duties to her client.

Gonzales was then sued for other alleged mistakes in her role as a family lawyer, and years after her Facebook rant the attorney’s remarks came up as the regulatory body suspended her law license for 60 days.

Gonzales was sued in 2023 by a paralegal who claimed they had not been paid $2,100, which she reportedly tried to ignore when it came to small claims court.

According to the Business Den, she failed to participate in discovery for the case, causing a judge to hold her in contempt and sentence her to 30 hours of community service.

In early 2024, Gonzales was again accused of failing to set a hearing in a client’s divorce case, which caused the case to be dismissed.

She was also accused in another case of failing to tell a client what her hourly rate was for her services.

The accusations came before the Office of Attorney Regulation, which brought up Gonzales’s Facebook rant from 2020 as it asked a judge to suspend her license for 60 days.

In a report from the office, the regulatory body went on to heap praise on Gonzales and said she was remorseful over the lapses as it did not ask for her to be disbarred.

‘The respondent has a positive reputation in the community, both non-legal and legal,’ the office wrote.

‘The respondent acknowledges the difficulties of representing this (Hispanic) population, as it is her experience they typically do not trust the legal system, are not very educated, and do not have significant funds at their disposal.

‘The respondent has a positive reputation for meeting her clients and the community where they are, and is remorseful that her misconduct in the matter fell below her communities’ needs and her ethical duties.’
