Dad says killer driver 'stole my future' in horrific crash which claimed wife's life

A grieving dad said his future had been “stolen” by a reckless Birmingham driver who killed his wife as she drove her family to a college open day. Anayat Ur-Rehman smashed into a Ford Fiesta as he undertook it while speeding – sending the Fiesta careering across a central reservation and into an Audi containing Abigail and Ryan Hudson and their two daughters. Teacher Abigail was killed instantly and their youngest child, then just ten, suffered what police called “catastrophic injuries”, including a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain, which will affect her for life. He was handed three years, to run concurrently, for causing serious injury by dangerous driving and banned from driving for nine years. In a powerful victim impact statement, Mr Hudson told Ur-Rehman: “Her death has left a permanent void in our lives, and no words can truly capture the weight of that loss. “Since that day, our future – the one we had built together and looked forward to – has been stolen from us. Our children’s lives have been irreversibly altered. “Our youngest suffered catastrophic injuries in the crash. She now must take medication for the rest of her life, and the scars on her face will forever serve as a daily reminder of what happened. “The hardest part of all is knowing everything Abbi will miss.” He continued: “She won’t see her daughters grow up. She won’t be there for their proms, their graduations, or to see them fall in love. “She won’t be there on their wedding days or to hold her grandchildren. She won’t be there to celebrate another anniversary with me or grow old with me as we had always planned. “Every single one of those moments that should have been filled with joy will instead be marked with sadness because Abbi won’t be there.” The tragedy happened as Ur-Rehman drove a Volkswagen Passat on the A456 Hagley Causeway, between Hagley and Halesowen , on Saturday, October 19 last year. Ur-Rehman had three passengers in his car and had been travelling from Kidderminster to Birmingham. Ur-Rehman’s manoeuvre – branded “highly-dangerous” by West Mercia Police – caused a five-car collision, which saw the Fiesta become airborne and flip over the grass central reservation of the dual carriageway. It collided with Abigail’s Audi, which was travelling in the opposite direction. A fundraising appeal for Mr Hudson and his daughters raised more than £16,000. Organiser Ben Parish said of the family on the Gofundme page: “The courage, strength, and positivity they have shown in supporting each other has been nothing short of breathtaking. “In life, you’re generally discouraged from meeting your heroes through fear of being disappointed or let down. They are our new heroes, and there’s been no disappointment, just hope, inspiration, and awe at their incredible bond and strength as a family. Abbi shines through in all of them.” Get the latest BirminghamLive news direct to your inbox Det Con Joe Curry, of West Mercia ‘s serious collision investigation unit South, said: “We welcome the sentencing of Ur-Rehman whose dangerous actions and appalling driving have ultimately taken the life of a mother and seriously injured her daughter while destroying a family. “No sentence will ever replace Abigail, but we hope this is one step in them rebuilding their lives and goes some way to seeing justice done. Ur-Rehman showed a total disregard for the safety of the other road users on that day. “And we hope the tragic outcome will teach a sobering lesson about the reason for speed limits and driving regulations to anyone thinking of driving in such a thoughtless and selfish manner putting so many people at risk as he did.”
