Two men, Demartravion “Trey” Reed and Cory Zukatis, were found hanging from trees on Monday in separate parts of Mississippi, prompting investigations, but no confirmed connection have been found between the incidents. In Vicksburg, Cory Zukatis, a white man from Brandon, was discovered hanging in a wooded area near the Ameristar Casino around 1:30 PM, according to the Vicksburg Police Department. Authorities are investigating the circumstances, but have stated this case is not linked to the other incident in the state. Meanwhile, Delta State University is investigating after 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a Black student from Grenada, was found deceased near the campus pickleball courts around 7 AM. University Police Chief Mike Peeler said no foul play is suspected. The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy, confirming there were no injuries consistent with assault. The Bolivar County Coroner’s official statement read, “Based on the preliminary examination, we can confirm that the deceased did not suffer any lacerations, contusions, compound fractures, broken bones, or injuries consistent with an assault.” Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and local police departments, are involved in both investigations. Chief Peeler reassured the public that no campus lockdown was necessary and emphasized that Delta State University remains a safe environment. “This is a safe campus. Delta State University is a beautiful place to be. It’s just unfortunate this loss that comes heavily to our campus,” he said. At this time, officials have not found any evidence linking the two cases, and investigations into both cases are ongoing.
