New cameras will be going up at key locations in Birmingham as drivers face fines for traffic offences. Birmingham City Council is launching new enforcement against breaches of road rules. Specifically, the new ANPR cameras will be looking out for motorists making banned turns at three locations. Drivers can essentially get away with breaking these rules at the moment due to a lack of enforcement. It’s the latest part of the city council’s road safety drive which will also include new speed cameras and new 30mph limits on a number of main roads. There will be a period of testing before enforcement begins. Warnings may be issued early on rather than financial penalties as motorists get used to the system – though the rules should never be broken anyway so offenders have no excuse. Cllr Majid Mahmood, transport boss at the city council, said: “These new powers will help to make our roads safer by reducing dangerous driving behaviours like making banned turns and ignoring no-entry signs. “It will also allow for more effective local control over traffic flow and safety. “When enforcement action does begin, our focus will be on education. “New signage and road markings give motorists the opportunity to adjust their behaviour. We may also issue valid PCNs with no fine payable initially.”
