Zubeen Garg’s Mortal Remains To Be Placed At Sarusajai Stadium In Guwahati For Public Tribute

Renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19 following a scuba diving accident in Singapore. According to reports, Garg was rescued from the sea by Singapore police and immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite doctors’ best efforts, the singer sadly succumbed to his injuries.
Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains was taken to his residence after being brought to Guwahati airport from Delhi. A sea of fans gathered to honour him one last time.

Fans and admirers will be able to pay their final respects to late singer Zubeen Garg at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex (Sarusajai Stadium) in Guwahati on Sunday. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the singer’s mortal remains will be placed at the stadium.
In his post, the Chief Minister mentioned that people will be allowed to visit from 9 am to 7 pm, with special arrangements in place to handle the large crowd expected. The message read: “The Government of Assam, with deep sorrow, informs that the mortal remains of Shri Zubeen Garg, an artist larger than life, a cultural icon, filmmaker, and the eternal heartthrob of millions, will be kept at Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex (Sarusajai Stadium) tomorrow, September 21, from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, for friends, followers, and admirers to pay their last respects.”
The post further added: “All are requested to extend their cooperation in ensuring that the final journey of Assam’s beloved son is conducted with dignity and becomes a farewell to be remembered for all time.”
In another update, the Chief Minister informed that a cabinet meeting will be held at 6 pm on Sunday to finalise the cremation venue for the late singer.

The Assam government has declared a three-day state mourning from September 20 to 22 following the passing of Zubeen Garg. During this period, no official entertainment, ceremonial events, or public celebrations will be held, the Assam CMO announced.
“The Government of Assam expresses deep shock and sorrow at the passing of Shri Zubeen Garg, eminent singer, filmmaker and cultural icon. State mourning has been declared from 20th to 22nd September,” the government said in a statement.
As a mark of respect, all official entertainment events, dinners, and ceremonial events have been cancelled during the mourning period. Events under the Seva Saptah initiative that involve ceremonial components or benefit distributions have also been postponed.

However, the government clarified that essential service-oriented activities will continue as planned. These include health camps, Nikshay Mitra support initiatives for tuberculosis patients, and plantation drives, which are part of ongoing public welfare programmes.
“During this period, there will be no official entertainment, dinners, or ceremonial functions. Seva Saptah programmes that involve ceremonial events or distribution of benefits are postponed as a mark of respect. However, service-oriented activities such as health camps, Nikshay Mitra support for TB patients, and plantation will continue,” the statement read.
Zubeen Garg passed away in a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore on Friday. He had travelled to the city for the North East India Festival, where he was scheduled to perform on September 20. The event has now been cancelled.
Over the years, Zubeen gifted audiences unforgettable songs in Assamese, Hindi, and Bengali. Among his most celebrated tracks was Ya Ali from the Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut-starrer Gangster, which remains a fan favourite to this day.
