Tottenham expected to push for ‘top class’ Bayern Munich star in January

Joao Palhinha has quickly adapted to his surrounding at Tottenham and become a vital part of the team
Tottenham signed some high-profile players in the summer following their Europa League success last season. However, one signing that went under the radar and has stood out is Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich. The Portugal international was signed by the Lilywhites on a season-long loan, with the North London club having an option to make the deal permanent for £27m next summer.
The 30-year-old has already managed to win over the Spurs fans with his consistently brilliant displays under Thomas Frank. He has been involved on both ends of the pitch, with the goal against Manchester City last month being the highlight of his short career at N17.
It is fair to say that Palhinha has brought in stability and experience in the middle of the park for Tottenham. Before leaving for Bayern Munich last year, the prolific midfielder was widely regarded as one of the best #6 in Europe. And Spurs fans can now see why he was being rated so highly during his time in the Premier League with Fulham.
Tottenham keen to retain Joao Palhinha on a permanent deal
Tottenham have looked like a completely different side whenever Joao Palhinha has featured under Thomas Frank. Playing as an anchor for the Lilywhites in the middle of the park, the Portugal international has not let anyone through him yet. His presence in the team has also liberated the likes of Pape Matar Sarr and Lucas Bergvall, giving the duo the freedom to venture forward without worrying about leaving gaps in behind.
Taking notice of his impact at N17, Spurs are not wasting any time to sign Palhinha permanently. As per Graeme Bailey (via TBR Football),
“He’s exactly what they expected. When he left, he was already one of the Premier League’s best holding midfielders. But yes, he’s absolutely top class. I fully expect discussions about a permanent deal to begin in January once the transfer window opens.”
The journalist adds,
“They may even try to finalise the permanent deal sooner. He’s very happy in London, and I don’t see him moving elsewhere. Tottenham are fortunate that there’s really no other club in London that could challenge them.”
Graeme Bailey reports that Tottenham are impressed with Joao Palhinha’s presence in the team and are willing to sign him permanently as soon as possible. The journalist adds that the Lilywhites might also try to turn the deal permanent in January itself to not risk any complications later on. Bailey suggests that Palhinha is keen to stay at N17, as he wants to help the club build on their Europa League success.
Signing a player of Palhinha’s calibre for just £27m should be a no-brainer. If the Lilywhites end up buying the Portugal international permanently, he will surely be considered as one of the best bits of business Spurs have done in a long time. The 30-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down, and has quickly adapted to life at Hotspur Way.
