What is ‘Wrestlepalooza’ about?
This is the first “Wrestlepalooza” event since 2000, and the first time the banner event has happened under the WWE banner since the brand acquired it from ECW. Ultimately, Wrestlepalooza will serve as the premium event sequel to SummerSlam, and brings the stars of WWE’s Monday Night RAW and Friday Night SmackDown! to the stage for titanic clashes and explosive storylines.
Everybody’s eyes will be on John Cena, at his first and only Wrestlepalooza appearance. The WWE superstar and Hollywood star is retiring from the promotion at the end of 2025. Cena lost the Undisputed Championship at SummerSlam after being attacked by Brock Lesnar, and a clash between the two rivals has been confirmed for the event.
What happened in the WWE this week?
Everything that happened on RAW and SmackDown this week has been preview material for Wrestlepalooza. Here’s a recap.
First, on RAW this Monday, September 15, after a hard-fought tag-team match where Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed beat LA Knight & Jimmy Uso, LA Knight still managed to drop Jey Uso with a devastating BFT.
The tension only got hotter when John Cena challenged Brock Lesnar, making sure Fight Night at Wrestlepalooza will be one to watch. Meanwhile, Lyra Valkyria pushed through injury to defeat Roxanne Perez, especially once Raquel Rodriguez was ejected for trying to interfere. Penta grabbed a win over Kofi Kingston, fighting off attempts from The New Day to sway the match.
Stephanie Vaquer took down Kairi Sane ahead of her title showdown with IYO SKY, though Asuka made quite the scene. CM Punk & AJ Lee squared up with Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch, setting up major fireworks.
Then, on Smackdown this Friday, September 19, Brock Lesnar barged in and took out commentator, Michael Cole, sending a warning to John Cena that “D-Day tomorrow” isn’t going to be pretty.
Elsewhere, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss defended their Women’s Tag Titles against Alba Fyre & Chelsea Green – the champs won, but the clash made it clear the challengers are dangerous.
Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed dominated Fraxiom in a blink-and-you-missed-it match, further laying down the “monster” vibe heading into the big card.
Over in the Women’s division, things heated up when Nia Jax, Tiffany Stratton, and Jade Cargill were set up for a triple threat match next week. Words were said, tempers flared.
The standout was Sami Zayn vs. Carmelo Hayes for the U.S. Title, featuring back-and-forth action, decent heat, and Zayn came out on top with a Blue Thunder Bomb.
And finally, Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre had their contract signing. It was pretty tense, and McIntyre attacked Rhodes before walking off, planting seeds for Saturday.
