Greece’s Eurobank to open India office to tap business momentum

Greece’s Eurobank is setting up a representative office in India to tap the positive business momentum between the two countries.

“We have received authorisation from the Reserve Bank of India end of last month for setting up our representative office in Mumbai. We are very excited about the prospect, and we are aiming to make it operational by mid-December,” said Panayiotis Chrysostomou, Manager, Banking Services & Representative Offices, Eurobank Cyprus.

Eurobank, which has assets of €100 billion, is headquartered in Greece and has subsidiaries in Bulgaria and Cyprus. It has a presence in Luxembourg and the UK too.

“We are in the process of establishing a physical presence in Israel, Saudi Arabia and the UAE as well,” Chrysostomou said at the ICC Global Business Summit in Mumbai on Thursday.

Eurobank’s India foray comes amid strengthening of ties between India and Greece. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) initiative is expected to boost connectivity further and bring financing opportunities for lenders like Eurobank.

Last year, India-Greece-Cyprus (IGC) Business and Investment Council was set up to boost trade and investment between the countries. Indian companies such as tour operator Thomas Cook and AI solutions provider Bcentrique have set up operations in Cyprus.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Cyprus in June signalling greater economic co-operation and India’s support to its ongoing dispute with Turkiye.

Greece seeks Indian investments, promises swifter business visas

Meanwhile Greece is pitching itself as a gateway to Europe and is looking to attract investments in ports and the energy sector.

Addressing a separate gathering, Greece’s ambassador to India, Aliki Koutsomitopoulou, said that feasibility studies for the privatisation of ten ports are underway. Greece aims to become a regional hub for green energy transmission, with investments in land and sea corridors. Non-stop flights by IndiGo and Aegean Airlines will reinforce business activity, she said.

“Co-operation between Greece and India has many layers. Of course, trade and investments are two of the main pillars, but other sectors as defense, security, tourism and mobility are closely linked. The Greek Embassy in Delhi is striving to facilitate the movement of business people from India to Greece, as well as the flow of professionals interested in working in Greece and who can also fulfill the needs of Greek businesses concerning manpower,” she added.
