Soon, Delhi to roll out national smart card for all public transport

Commuters in Delhi will soon be able to use a single smart card for travel across buses, metro, and other public transport systems, as the Delhi government prepares to launch the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) program, officials said on Thursday. The NCMC is a contactless prepaid card that allows users to travel in all public transport services in Delhi and other participating cities. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has invited bids from nationalised banks to issue colour-coded smart cards for use across the city’s transport network. The cards will have three types: pink for women and the transgender community, blue for all passengers, and orange for monthly passes covering general and concessional categories. Pink card holders can travel free on buses and on a paid basis in services like the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). Cards will be issued to bona fide Delhi residents aged 12 and above with valid address proof. Commuters can obtain the NCMC from their preferred banks through branches or other service channels. Selected banks will provide instant issuance at designated points. “During travel in a bus, the commuter shall specify the destination of travel to the conductor who will then use the Electronic Ticketing Machine (ETM) to punch in the necessary details and generate the e-ticket,” an official said. The ETM will deduct fares from the card if applicable and update the balance in real time. Transaction data will be sent securely to the Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) and then to the acquirer bank. Payments between banks will be settled daily. Commuters can recharge the card via internet banking, point-of-sale locations, or other channels offered by the issuing bank.Live Events At the end of each trip, cash and digital payments collected will be deposited at depots and reconciled with backend revenue reports. Inspectors may check card validity using the ETM, and invalid cards or e-tickets can result in fines with a system-generated receipt, the official added. According to DTC ridership data from January to June 2025, the average daily ridership was about 14.25 lakh for male passengers and 14.79 lakh for female passengers, excluding monthly pass holders. DTC has issued around 7.3 lakh general category passes and 3.5 lakh concessional category passes so far in the financial year 2024–25.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
