Antonia Bance MP urges urgent government action to support Jaguar Land Rover supply chain

The letter, sent on September 17, highlights the severe pressure on the predominantly UK-based supply chain following the cyber security incident that forced JLR to pause production. While more than 33,000 people are directly employed by JLR, an estimated 200,000 jobs in the supply chain are now at risk if the shutdown is prolonged.

Antonia Bance MP said: “Jaguar Land Rover is one of the biggest companies of British advanced manufacturing, and the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people depend on it. The pause in production is already putting serious strain on suppliers, especially smaller businesses with fragile cash flow. If these firms go under, we risk losing irreplaceable skills and jobs in the West Midlands.”

The MPs are urging JLR, owned by Tata, to take responsibility for protecting the companies it depends on, but are also calling on the UK Government to step in if the disruption continues. Possible measures include:

An Automotive Business Interruption Loan Scheme, based on the established CBILS mechanism.A limited, sector-specific job retention (furlough) scheme, as suggested by Unite and GMB.Other creative interventions working with the British Business Bank and commercial lenders.

Antonia Bance MP added: “Workers and businesses need urgent reassurance that help will be available. We cannot stand by and watch viable companies collapse because of circumstances outside their control. The Government must move quickly and act decisively to safeguard jobs and the future of our automotive industry.”

The MPs have pledged to continue working closely with both ministers and JLR to protect jobs and ensure the long-term resilience of the UK’s automotive sector.
