Roblox Charlie Kirk ‘Assassination Simulator’ under fire as children’s online gaming platform faces scrutiny

Roblox’s gruesome ‘assassination simulator’ game faces scrutiny

Roblox, the immensely popular online gaming platform with over 380 million monthly active users, nearly 40% of whom are under age of 13, has come under intense scrutiny following the appearance of a gruesome ‘assassination simulator’ game depicting the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The disturbing user-created game erupted on Roblox shortly after Kirk was assassinated during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.Outrage and regulatory attentionThe violent virtual reenactment of Kirk’s murder, accessible even to very young children, triggered widespread outrage from parents, political figures, and safety advocates. More than 100 Roblox-created games and “experiences” referencing the assassination were swiftly taken down by the company for violating platform rules. Despite these removals, the episode has triggered long-standing concerns about Roblox’s extreme content and safety measures.Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced an investigation to determine if legal action against Roblox can be taken, accusing the company of lacking adequate safety controls and being “overrun with harmful content and child predators.” Similarly, Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a close associate of Kirk, threatened to get it removed from the Apple App Store and get the Federal Communications Commission involved unless the platform urgently enhanced content oversight. The Roblox history of challengesUnlike traditional games, Roblox hosts a user-driven ecosystem where anyone can develop and publish their own games and interactive experiences. This openness has made the platform a multi-billion dollar business, generating over $3.06 billion in revenue in 2024, a nearly 30% increase from 2023.Live EventsHowever, this also poses significant content risks. Roblox has faced prior criticism for hosting inappropriate and dangerous games, including school shooting simulations and sexually explicit content. In April 2025, the company banned many “house hangout” style games linked with simulated sexual activity after a lawsuit from Louisiana’s Attorney General.A high-profile lawsuit alleges that grooming of minors and subsequent abuse occurred through Roblox, with more than 250 similar cases reportedly being prepared for litigation.Company responsesAfter the incident, Roblox’s chief safety officer Matt Kaufman emphasized that “Roblox is committed to creating a safe platform for our users and empowering parents to make the best decision for their children,” reported Washington Times.Following the Kirk shooting spree, Roblox’s moderation team moved quickly to remove the violent contents related to his death, stating to Fox Business that over 100 such experiences were deleted and that ongoing efforts continue to protect the platform’s safety and civility.
