The Central Government representative for Andalucia, Pedro Fernández, pointed out that the work on the bridge was absolutely necessary for safety reasons.
Trouble is that the section of A-44 between Ízbor and Velez de Benaudalla has been a sinkhole for funds thanks to future problems that were known even 25 years ago when this section was still only on the drawing board.
In 2003 they had to build a support pillar at the northern end because one had sunk, buckling the bridge and now the support pillar at the other end has been sinking so that another support has to be put in place and the road structure elevated so that it can be rested back down on the new support.
Sr. Pedro Fernández said, “We are doing all we can to improve the situation” pointing out that the still warm weather in September has played negatively against emergency work because they were hoping that traffic down to the beaches on the weekend would have died off – it hasn’t.
He also insists that they are working flat out, yet they are not working shifts in order to work around the clock, it should be noted. So, it just appears that they are keeping their fingers crossed that the weather will turn cold and wet so that the beach will not be an attractive option for a Sunday outing.
Note: The 2003 photo is one that we published when the mag was still only in black and white.
