Three Generations, One Film Title: The Kapoors’ Rare Bollywood Legacy Will Surprise You

It is not unusual for Bollywood to reuse film titles. But here is a unique case—three different films, all with the same title, made across three generations of the same star family. A grandfather, his brother, and later the granddaughter all headlined movies with the same name.
We are talking about the film ‘Anari’. This title was carried by three members of the Kapoor family—two superstar actors and one superstar actress. Each played the lead role, but the most memorable one came from the daughter of the house.
The Kapoor clan’s ‘Anari’ journey includes Raj Kapoor’s ‘Anari’ (1959), Shashi Kapoor’s ‘Anari’ (1975), and Karisma Kapoor’s ‘Anari’ (1993).
First, Raj Kapoor’s ‘Anari’ (1959). Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, this comedy-drama starred Raj Kapoor, Nutan, Motilal, and Lalita Pawar. Even today, it holds a 7.6 IMDb rating.
Raj Kapoor’s ‘Anari’ was the highest-grossing film of 1959. Its success was so huge that it was remade in Tamil as ‘Pasamum Nesamum’ (1964) and in Turkish as ‘Derbeder’ (1960).
Next came Shashi Kapoor’s ‘Anari’ (1975), a romantic drama co-starring Sharmila Tagore. The film also featured Moushumi Chatterjee and Kader Khan. While not a blockbuster, it did decent business at the box office.
Finally, Karisma Kapoor’s ‘Anari’ (1993). This was a blockbuster hit and marked the Bollywood debut of South superstar Venkatesh, who starred opposite Karisma.
The 1993 ‘Anari’ became one of the biggest hits of the year and was even remade in the South. Filmfare went on to count it among the best films of that year, cementing Karisma’s place as a leading star.
