Argentine Court Seizes Assets From Diego Maradona's Sisters, Lawyer Over Allegations Of Fraud

Argentinian officials seized assets from two of the legendary Diego Maradona’s sisters, as well as his attorney and three other individuals on Thursday, over allegations of fraudulent management of the player’s brand.
A Buenos Aires court indicted Maradona’s former lawyer, Matias Morla, and two of his assistants for suspected fraudulent handling of the World Cup-winner’s assets.

Rita and Claudia, Maradona’s sisters, along with a notary, were prosecuted as accomplices in the case. The court ordered the seizure of $1.34 million from all the accused.
Maradona’s children have claimed that his brand and its subsidiaries should have been transferred to them when he died in 2020 at age 60.
The court alleges that Morla’s brand management business was merely a front, and Maradona continued to control his assets until his death. Under these conditions, the ruling states that the assets should “immediately revert to his heirs.”
Dalma and Giannina, Maradona’s daughters, first accused Morla and other defendants in 2021. The football star’s three other children have since joined the legal fight.
Maradona passed away while recovering from brain surgery. He died of heart failure and acute pulmonary edema—a condition where fluid accumulates in the lungs—two weeks after the surgery.
Another case determining if there was medical negligence in his death is awaiting retrial after a judge recused herself due to involvement in a clandestine documentary. That trial was scrapped in May after two months of hearings.
