Huge country estate once home to Poundland founder now on market for £5 million

A historic country mansion that previously belonged to the founder of Poundland has come onto the market with a £5 million asking price. Hammer Hill House is a huge seven-bedroom estate in Romsley, Worcestershire, which was once the home of Poundland founder Steve Smith until he sold it back in 2018. The property was notably designed by architect Sir Bertram Clough Williams-Ellis, who brought the Welsh holiday village Portmeirion to life, which served as the setting for the 1960s television series The Prisoner. Boasting sweeping views across the Severn Valley, the mansion features seven bathrooms, an indoor heated swimming pool, a games room, a private bar, and a drawing room complete with dance floor. The bespoke kitchen features the hand-painted craftsmanship of Christians of Nantwich and houses an iconic AGA cooker. Horse enthusiasts will find the property particularly appealing, with woodland trails and four paddocks spread across the 28.2 acres of grounds. Constructed in 1923, the opulent 14,690 square foot country residence has been branded a “rare jewel in the heart of the Midlands” by estate agents Chartwell Noble. Their listing reads: “Hammer Hill House is more than just a home; it is a statement of timeless design, lifestyle, and heritage. “Set high above the Severn Valley on the Worcestershire and Shropshire borders, this exceptional country estate combines architectural pedigree with contemporary luxury, offering both privacy and convenience in equal measure. “It is a house that inspires at first sight, but also one that functions beautifully as a home a place to retreat, to entertain, and to create lasting memories.” It continues: “For equestrian buyers, the paddocks and grounds present excellent opportunities, while families will be drawn to the lifestyle offered by the gardens, pool, and expansive reception spaces.” When he sold the property, Poundland founder Steve Smith admitted it was difficult to say goodbye to the unique estate. He commented: “The house is very special to us and it will be a real wrench for us to leave. “It was a real labour of love and no expense was spared. I especially love our home pub with a fully stocked bar. It’s really unique and we’ve had some great parties there.” Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE
