A Texas State University student, Devion Canty Jr, has been expelled after a video showed him mocking the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Canty later said it was a mistake made “in the heat of the moment” and has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his education. In his crowdfunding page, Canty said, “I made the decision to withdraw, not because I wanted to leave, but for my own safety and the well-being of the campus community.” He added that he is being unfairly portrayed as an “out-of-control, disrespectful young Black man” and insisted he did not harm anyone. Viral Video Sparks Outrage A video went viral showing Canty shouting at mourners during a memorial for Kirk outside the Turning Point USA campus chapter. In the clip, Canty appeared to re-enact Kirk being shot, shouting, “Charlie Kirk got hit in the neck, b***h!” while slapping his neck and mimicking the recoil of a bullet. He also repeated the act from atop a campus statue. Texas Governor Greg Abbott demanded action. “Hey Texas State. This conduct is not accepted at our schools. Expel this student immediately. Mocking assassination must have consequences,” Abbott posted on X. University President Kelly Damphouse later confirmed Canty’s removal, calling the behaviour “disturbing” and against the values of Texas State University. Fundraiser And Personal Defence Canty’s fundraiser, titled “Going Back to txst”, portrayed him as a passionate student who reacted emotionally after being provoked. He wrote that he was spit on, called racial slurs, and witnessed women being pushed and cursed at before he lost control. “While I recognise my actions weren’t perfect, I did not harm anyone,” he said. The row comes in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination on September 10. Several people across the country have reportedly lost jobs for joking about or justifying his killing. ABC recently suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the late-night host criticised Trump supporters in his Monday monologue, accusing them of trying to distance the assassin, Tyler Robinson, from the MAGA movement. Charlie Kirk’s Killing Kirk was shot in the neck on September 10 during the opening stop of a Turning Point USA tour in Orem, Utah. He died shortly afterwards. Police have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with Kirk’s killing. Prosecutors say the case could carry the death penalty if he is convicted. Officials believe the shooting was politically motivated, saying Robinson was the only left-leaning member of a Republican family that supported Donald Trump.
