Red rain alert in Dehradun, heavy rainfall likely after cloudburst leaves 13 dead

At least 13 people have died in Dehradun alone, and 15 across the state, following a night of relentless rainfall that caused widespread devastation across Uttarakhand. The state government has issued a red alert for Dehradun, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar, warning of extremely heavy rain and the risk of further fatalities, landslides, and infrastructure collapse through September 20.Dehradun bore the brunt of the downpour, which caused a cloudburst in the city, washing away roads, and damaging homes and shops. Two major bridges collapsed, cutting multiple routes connecting the city to other surrounding areas..preferred-source-banner{ margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom:10px;}The Dehradun-Vikasnagar National Highway suffered significant damage after a large portion of a bridge was destroyed, cutting off several towns and causing large-scale power outages. Another section of the highway at Nanda Ki Chowki in the Prem Nagar area also collapsed, forcing authorities to shut down traffic in both directions.Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman confirmed that nearly 15 people have died statewide, with 13 casualties reported from Dehradun alone. “The heaviest rainfall was recorded in areas like Sahastradhara, Mussoorie, and Prem Nagar. A bailey bridge has been washed away, roads have disappeared in several locations, and over 900 people have been rescued. But unfortunately, we’ve lost many lives — mostly in Dehradun,” he said.- EndsPublished By: Harshita DasPublished On: Sep 16, 2025
