Vithas unveils new Barcelona hospital set to transform healthcare in Catalonia

A brand-new private hospital is about to change the healthcare landscape in Catalonia. Vithas Barcelona Hospital, located in Esplugues de Llobregat, has officially been presented to the public, bringing together more than 200 leading figures from politics, business and medicine. The state-of-the-art facility will open its doors to patients in the second half of October 2025.

With 39,000 square metres, 160 single rooms and 14 operating theatres, the hospital promises to become one of the most advanced medical centres in Spain. It is the 22nd hospital in the Vithas group and its fifth facility in Catalonia, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to the region.

A hospital built for the future

During the presentation event, regional and national authorities highlighted the importance of this new centre for both the healthcare system and the local economy. Miquel Sàmper, Catalonia’s Minister of Business and Labour, stressed the hospital’s role in creating jobs and fostering public-private collaboration. “This project generates wealth, prosperity and employment while adding real value to our healthcare system,” he said.

Local mayor Eduard Sanz welcomed Vithas as a new ‘neighbour’ of the town, pointing out how the hospital would integrate into Esplugues’ business and social fabric. Meanwhile, José Crespín, Spain’s Deputy Government Delegate, underlined the group’s pioneering approach to research, teaching and patient care.

The new hospital will operate with the same Joint Commission International standards that already certify other Vithas centres worldwide, guaranteeing excellence in safety and medical quality.

Cutting-edge facilities and personalised care

The hospital combines technology, sustainability and patient-centred design. It offers urgent care 24/7, separate circuits for adults and children, and a wide range of services, from oncology and cardiology to neurosciences and maternal-infant health. Once fully operational, it will employ more than 1,800 healthcare and support professionals.

Every detail has been designed to create ‘healing spaces’, from private rooms to digital patient management through the Vithas One platform. The hospital also opens as a carbon-neutral facility in gas and electricity consumption, in line with the group’s environmental commitments.

Dr Pedro Rico, CEO of Vithas, called the hospital ‘a monument to hope’, not only for patients and families, but also for healthcare workers and businesses linked to the project. Hospital director Anna Guiró added that empathy and human connection will be at the heart of care: “This hospital is not just modern and efficient — it is a space that inspires trust, transforms lives and evolves with the needs of society.”

A new healthcare benchmark in Catalonia

With its size, technology and focus on innovation and personalised medicine, Vithas Barcelona aims to become a benchmark for healthcare in Catalonia. It adds to Vithas’ existing centres in Lleida, Tàrrega and Garraf, and is seen as a strategic step in the group’s national expansion.

For the patients who will soon walk through its doors, the promise is clear: a hospital where medical excellence, human care and sustainability go hand in hand.
