New Lake Lenape Dam to open Monday

MAYS LANDING—U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew will join state and local officials Monday for the grand opening ceremony of the new Lake Lenape Dam, which follows a multimillion-dollar reconstruction project.
The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. and feature a helicopter flyover by the United States Coast Guard and a performance of God Bless America by the William Davies Middle School band.
The new dam is the largest labyrinth dam in the state, and it is the first dam project in the country to be funded with a Congressional Community Project funding earmark, according to Van Drew’s Office.
Additionally, Van Drew will announce the introduction of the national dam safety legislation, the Dam Assessment and Mitigation Support Act.
The old dam, built in the 1860s, was classified by the state Department of Environmental Protection as a “Class One High Hazard Dam,” meaning it posed a serious risk to those in the area if it were to fail.
