Why it unravelled at Man United for Alejandro Garnacho and what Chelsea saw in him – ‘His choices’

Not even two years have passed since Alejandro Garnacho scored a sensational overhead kick to power Manchester United to a 3-0 victory over Everton. The strike was a goal of season winner as soon as it crashed into the net and at that stage it seemed the winger was destined to have a key role for years to come at Old Trafford . Six months later he scored in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City and his future at United seemed as bright as his wonder goal. Yet this weekend he will trot out at Old Trafford in the blue of Chelsea having found himself ostracised by Ruben Amorim at United. He’s gone from being talked about as having United parallels with Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney , to being discarded having trained with a ‘bomb squad’. Amorim did not even want to talk about him in his pre-match press conference and it is clear the head coach did not value the Argentina international, who criticised the manager’s decision to omit him from the starting XI for the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. That was the final straw in a tormented relationship between the pair and from that moment on it was a case of when the 21-year-old would leave, not if. Chelsea were long-term admirers and swooped in the closing days of the transfer window. The Blues considered the £40million fee a bargain price given Garnacho’s ability, experience and high ceiling, and wanted additional competition for Jamie Gittens on the left flank. He’s made only two substitute appearances since his move but could start against United. Blues boss Enzo Maresca has spoken positively of Garnacho and he played a part in Moises Caicedo’s goal against Brentford last time out. The questions over his attitude while at United are not a concern at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea reporter for Football London, Bobby Vincent, pointed to the comparison between Garnacho and Jadon Sancho, who spent last season on loan at the club from United, as evidence of the Blues being able to get the best out of mercurial players. “Like all things, it (his attitude) would have been considered when Chelsea were initially exploring a move for him,” he said. “Maresca worked with Jadon Sancho last season, who had similar complaints surrounding him, but from what I understand, Sancho worked really well during his time at Chelsea and the club were impressed with the winger’s work ethic and professionalism.” Yet Garnacho still has some work to do to win over the supporters, with Vincent adding: “The fans are very much still split on his signing. It seems, though, most of them were encouraged by his cameo in Brentford. He has plenty to prove to the fans – let’s put it that way.” He will have plenty to prove to himself, too, particularly on his return to Manchester on Saturday evening. One man who knew him well coming through the ranks at Old Trafford was former United Under-21 boss Neil Wood. “Garna’ has got talent, some of the choices he has done off the pitch might have not helped him,” said Wood, when speaking to the MEN earlier this year. “A bit of immaturity maybe, but it is a shame to see it. A couple of those things can be easily stopped, whether it is a bit of education. “He is not a bad lad or a bad guy but his choices have not helped him. He needs to get back to concentrating on his football and let that do the talking.” We will see who has the last word come Saturday night.
