Jealous and violent man grabbed ex partner's neck and trashed her home

A jealous and violent man burst into his ex partner’s home and grabbed her neck before trashing her house after he mistakenly believed there was another man in the house. He later became involved in a police chase during which he sped and drove through red lights. Haydn Davies, 32, had been in a relationship with his victim and they had three children, but after he was released from prison in 2024 he told her he did not want to reconcile with her. A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday heard the defendant walked into his victim’s home in Newport uninvited and took her phone and iPad before trawling through her social media. On July 9, the victim accidentally called the defendant while she was watching television, and he thought he heard a man’s voice on the other end of the line. He turned up at the victim’s home and demanded to know where the man was, but she didn’t know what he was talking about. Davies took her phone from her and stamped on it, before punching the television set and breaking it. The defendant grabbed the victim by the neck and pushed her against the wall. His daughter called her grandmother who was put onto the phone with Davies, but he was threatening and “grossly offensive” towards her. Following the incident, the defendant continued to send unwanted voice and text messages in which he threatened violence against the victim and against anyone who came to her house, as well as making calls from unidentified numbers. On July 21, police saw Davies in a vehicle in Llantarnam Park Way in Cwmbran and pulled up next to him, but he increased his speed and took a roundabout in the wrong direction. He reached speeds of 70mph during the police chase as he drove towards Newport, and drove through red traffic lights before he was later detained. After he was released on bail, the defendant continued to call the victim until August. Davies, of Francis Street, Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil , later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, harassment, criminal damage, sending an offensive/indecent/obscene/menacing message, and dangerous driving. The court heard he has 10 previous convictions, the most of which were committed when he was a juvenile, but his last conviction for arson. In mitigation, Nigel Fryer said his client struggled to cope with the breakdown of his relationship and turned to drink and drugs, with him taking cocaine and drinking up to 10 pints of lager a day. Sentencing, Judge Lucy Crowther said: “Your behaviour was outrageous and out of control.” Davies was sentenced to 21 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months. The defendant was ordered to carry out an accredited programme requirement of 21 days, a 20 day rehabilitation activity requirement, an alcohol treatment requirement for nine months and disqualified from driving for two years, as well made subject to a restraining order.
