MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (HOL) — President Donald Trump launched an extended attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar on Thursday, repeating calls for her impeachment and assailing Somalia in remarks that came a day after the House narrowly blocked a Republican resolution to censure the Minnesota Democrat.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I think she’s terrible. I think she should be impeached.” He added, “If she got censured, that’s great, if she got impeached, that’s even better.”
Trump tied his remarks to the failed censure effort led by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) over alleged remarks about Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist who was shot and killed during a Utah campus event earlier this month. She narrowly survived the vote, which was tabled 214–213 on Wednesday after four Republicans broke ranks and joined Democrats. Omar, who has represented Minnesota’s Fifth District since 2019, thanked colleagues afterward for what she described as protecting free-speech rights.
The president, however, pressed for further punishment. “I think she should be impeached,” he said. “They impeached me twice for nothing… She should be impeached and it should happen fast.”
Trump also criticized Omar’s Somali roots in both his in-person remarks and a series of posts on his Truth Social platform.
“So how are they doing? How’s your government? Do they have a president? Do they have a council? Do they have anything? Do they have police? I love these people,” Trump told reporters. “They come from a place with nothing, nothing, no, anything, and then they tell us how to run our country.”
On Truth Social, he expanded on that theme: “Ilhan Omar’s Country of Somalia is plagued by a lack of central Government control, persistent Poverty, Hunger, Resurgent Terrorism, Piracy, decades of Civil War, Corruption, and pervasive Violence. 70% of the population lives in extreme Poverty, and widespread Food Insecurity.”
In another post, Trump wrote, “Somalia is consistently ranked among the World’s Most Corrupt Countries, including Bribery, Embezzlement, and a Dysfunctional Government. All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America!”
Trump also connected Omar to an unrelated criminal case announced this week in Minnesota, where federal prosecutors charged eight individuals with orchestrating an $8.4 million fraud against the state’s Housing Stabilization Services program, a Medicaid-funded benefit designed to help vulnerable residents secure housing.
“Does Ilhan Omar know these people? Are they from her wonderfully managed Home Country of Somalia?” Trump wrote, amplifying a social-media post about the charges.
In the same online posts, Trump revisited long-disputed claims about Omar’s personal life. “P.S. Wasn’t she the one that married her brother in order to gain Citizenship???” he wrote, before concluding, “What SCUM we have in our Country, telling us what to do, and how to do it. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Omar has repeatedly denied the allegation, which first circulated online years ago and has not been substantiated.
The confrontation highlights how Ilhan Omar has long served as one of Donald Trump’s preferred scapegoats, singled out time and again in charged language that marked her out during his presidency.
In 2019, Trump told Omar and three other Democratic congresswomen of color to “go back” to the countries they came from, a remark widely condemned as racist. At a campaign rally that summer, his supporters echoed the attack by chanting “send her back” as he criticized Omar from the stage.
The following year, he suggested Omar should be investigated for immigration fraud, reviving the same unsubstantiated allegation he repeated on Thursday. He has also repeatedly questioned her loyalty to the United States while disparaging Somalia, her country of birth.
