India’s ban on real-money online gaming has forced Bengaluru-based Gameskraft to restructure, resulting in the layoff of 120 employees. This move follows the company’s shutdown of its popular Rummyculture platform last month and reflects the growing challenges faced by the real-money gaming (RMG) sector in India. Gameskraft, which currently employs around 448 people, announced the job cuts as part of a broader restructuring following the passage of a new parliamentary Bill banning RMG. The company stated that the layoffs were made “with a very heavy heart” and warned that more structural changes could be on the horizon as the business adapts to the evolving regulatory environment. “After careful deliberation, as part of this restructuring, we will be, as of now, letting go of about 120 Krafters (employees) across teams and functions,” the company said in an official statement. Support For Laid-Off Employees Gameskraft has committed to providing laid-off workers with group health insurance coverage through March 2026, including those who had opted to cover dependent parents. Additionally, the company plans to offer placement support and prioritise rehiring for affected employees if new roles open up in the future. Prithvi Singh, Gameskraft’s founder and CEO, emphasised that the layoffs do not reflect on employee performance or dedication: “While this step is driven entirely by the external environment and the need to adapt to a new reality, it in no way reflects on their talent or dedication.” Industry-Wide Impact Gameskraft is among several companies hit hard by India’s crackdown on RMG. After the ban, other firms such as Zupee, Games24x7, Baazi Games, and Mobile Premier League have also announced layoffs, signalling a major shakeup in the country’s online gaming ecosystem. The company has stated it will not challenge the ban and is instead exploring new opportunities within India’s expanding digital gaming space.
