All heart: After a rough start, Australian star Jess Hull holds on to bronze behind Kenyan legend

Tokyo: With 100 metres to go, Jess Hull had silver. And when you are racing against the legendary Faith Kipyegon, that is sort of the best you can hope for.

But while the Australian star had Kipyegon in front of her, she still had two more Kenyans closing in just behind her.

Hull could also be forgiven for remembering the Diamond League race only weeks ago when she inexplicably hit the wall in the final straight in bizarre fashion. For a metronomically regular performer, and winner, was it just a mulligan? Was she going to stop again? No. She wasn’t. But nor could she hang on to silver.

Having sat on Kipyegon’s shoulder for the race, she now had to try to hang on down that final straight. She held out one Kenyan but not the other, being pipped in the final 10 metres.
