A 42-year-old resident of Gurgaon’s Sector 60 fell victim to a Rs 3.4 lakh credit card scam after responding to a fraudulent American Express credit card advertisement on Facebook. According to The Times of India, the scam unfolded when a fraudster, impersonating a bank official, contacted the man and persuaded him to download a malicious app. Once the app was installed, the scammer gained access to the victim’s phone gallery, extracting sensitive details from two credit cards, one issued by Kotak Mahindra Bank and the other by ICICI Bank. The fraud resulted in a loss of Rs 1.95 lakh from the Kotak Mahindra card and Rs 1.49 lakh from the ICICI card, totalling Rs 3.4 lakh. Practical Tips To Avoid Credit Card Fraud While this case may seem isolated, anyone can fall prey to such scams. Always stay vigilant and verify any suspicious communications related to financial products. To protect yourself, keep these precautions in mind: Do Not Click On Suspicious Ads: Avoid clicking on flashy advertisements promising free credit cards or no charges. Remember, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Verify URLs: Always check if the web address belongs to the official bank or credit card company before submitting any information. Avoid links from unknown agents or agencies. Avoid Downloading Unknown Apps: Only download official bank or NBFC apps. Never download apps sent by individuals claiming to represent your bank. Limit App Permissions: When installing any app, do not grant unnecessary permissions like access to your phone gallery or call records. Cross-Check Information: Before applying or sharing any details, verify all information through the official website of the bank or credit card issuer. Verify Offers: Try and verify if the credit card offers coming on your social media feed are real or fake to avoid being a victim of these credit card frauds.
