How to watch SBS On Demand from anywhere
Looking to watch SBS On Demand – the free-to-air broadcaster’s streaming home for its TV series, movies, sport and radio – from outside Australia?
If you’re visiting the US, Canada, UK or indeed anywhere else, you can use a VPN – NordVPN works best – to unblock SBS On Demand and tune in as normal from any location.

15,000+ hours of series, sport and movies: SBS On Demand
Get NordVPN (Save 70%) to watch SBS from abroad
Sport-loving Aussie ex-pats would be loath to miss some of the top action while away on vacation. Throughout September, the 2025 World Athletics Championships are in full swing, while SBS On Demand also had the rights to the 2025 Tour de France and Vuelta a España cycling and will continue to have 2026 World Cup qualifiers into the new year.
And, unlike many sports subscription services, all these are free to live stream – often you can watch on-demand at a later date, too.
There are also hundreds of top TV series available to stream on demand including the gritty The Handmaid’s Tale, brooding murder mystery Dark Winds and survival reality show Alone Australia.
Though watching SBS On Demand is as easy as throwing another shrimp on the barbie back home in Oz, it’ll stop working when you leave Australia. Here’s a full (and quick) guide to how to get SBS On Demand from anywhere in the world…
How to watch SBS On Demand in Australia
To begin watching SBS On Demand, you first must create and register an account. Thankfully, this only takes a matter of seconds, and because SBS On Demand is a free service, you don’t need to input any payment details. Happy days.
Register: Visit the SBS On Demand website, click ‘create an account’, then fill in the details required, usually just an email address and a password.
You’ll then be asked to verify your account over email – keep an eye in your Junk folder.
And that’s it, you’re good to start watching SBS On Demand for free! That means you can start live streaming TV channels SBS, SBS Viceland, SBS World Movies, SBS Food, NITV and SBS WorldWatch, or listen to one of seven radio stations, including Radio 1 or SBS Chill.
But you can only do this with an Australian IP address. Abroad right now? Here’s how to unblock SBS On Demand…
How to watch SBS On Demand from anywhere
SBS On Demand is only available to watch in Australia, which means it won’t work if you try to stream when overseas on business or vacation. However, you can always download a VPN to overcome these regional restrictions and access SBS On Demand as normal when you’re outside the Australia. You may be surprised how simple it is to do.

What sport will be shown live on SBS On Demand?
Despite being free-to-air, SBS On Demand stacks up pretty well against paid-for subscription services when it comes to live sports.
It’s the Australian home of the 2025 World Athletics Championships, with a peak of 1m viewers across all platforms for teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout’s 200m semifinal.
SBS On Demand is also a great place to watch cycling for free. The men’s and women’s Tour de France, Vuelta a España, Criterium du Dauphine and plenty more have been show on the streaming platform. That will continue into 2026, too.
The site also has 2026 World Cup qualifiers from South America and beyond, FIG world gymnastics, volleyball and motorsport.
All in all, that’s a pretty exhaustive list.
What streaming devices are supported by SBS On Demand?
Web Browsers (Chrome 119, Firefox 115, Safari 15, Microsoft Edge 120)
Mobile Devices (Android 8.0 and above, iOS 16 and above)
Amazon FireTV Stick
Android/Google TV (Android 9 and above, Sony, Kogan, TCL)
Apple TV (4th generation and later)

What content does SBS On Demand have?
In addition to more sport than you can shake the proverbial stick at, SBS On Demand has literally tens of thousands of hours of streaming content available at the touch of a button.
Among the most-watched shows on the streaming platform are The Handmaid’s Tale, which is now in its sixth season, making SBS one of the few places worldwide you can watch the award-winning dystopian drama for free.
You can also watch Irish gangster drama Kin, British crime drama Tin Star starring Tim Roth and Christina Hendricks and current affairs show Insight.
