LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) – After receiving a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Great Rivers United Way is working with the City of La Crosse to fill diaper bags with essentials to give out to families in need.
“There was a big need in our community right now for new mothers and post-partum mothers in need of supplies. This is a way to help them out,” says La Crosse human resources generalist Gwen Benish.
Volunteers at city hall filled diaper bags with wipes, books, diapers and other essentials. A small gesture that could make a big difference.
“Essentials like diapers, wipes, diaper bag can add up. That can be a hundred dollar cost at the store. For parents who may not have that, this is a big boost to everyday essentials that they’ll use,” says Great Rivers United Way community engagement director Connor Glassen.
City officials say those involved were happy to help.
“We felt this would be a great way to step outside of our normal duties and volunteer and give to the community in a different way. It’s important for us to work with united way and do something through a volunteer initiative,” says Benish.
The packed diaper bags are then sent to La Crosse County Health & Human Services and Family & Children’s Center to be given out to local parents.
“I know it strengthens our partnerships with our non-profit partners and community partners who benefit a little contribution of items that they also need. This will be put to great use with clients at the Family and Children’s Center and clients at Health and Human Services. More than that, it’s going to be impactful for the new parents and caregivers that are going to be getting these essential items,” says Glassen.
