Ex-Smiths frontman Morrissey cancels shows in Boston, Connecticut due to ‘credible threat’
Legendary Smiths frontman and solo English singer-songwriter Morrissey has canceled his appearance in Boston due to a “credible threat” on his life.
“Due to recent events and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and band, the upcoming shows this weekend at Foxwoods and MGM Music Hall have been cancelled. All tickets will be refunded automatically at your original point of purchase,” Morrissey posted on his Instagram page.
Morrissey was scheduled to play Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, tonight at and MGM Music Hall at Fenway tomorrow night. The two New England events were the fifth and sixth dates of his international “Nude” Tour that kicked off Sept. 10 in Montreal, Quebec.
MGM Music Hall made a similar post to Morriseey’s own that confirmed the cancellation. Foxwoods still had the concert listed on its entertainment page by 4:30 p.m. Friday.
His posts make no mention of upcoming future dates in the tour.
This isn’t the first time the outspoken singer-songwriter has been threatened — and not even on this tour. Following Morrissey’s performance in Ottawa, Canada, on Sept. 12, the newspaper Ottawa Citizen reported that a local resident named Noah Castellano allegedly made a threat against him on the social media platform Bluesky on Sept. 4.
According to the Citizen, the 26-year-old wrote posted: “Steven Patrick Morrissey when you perform at TD Place here in Ottawa next week on the evening of September 12th, 2025 at about 9pm, I will be present at the venue in the audience and I will attempt to shoot you many times and kill you with a very large gun that I own illegally.”
Morrissey played his show anyway. Castellano was arrested and released on $5,000 bail.
Morrissey rose to fame in the 1980s as the frontman of the beloved and very influential English band the Smiths. The band’s self-titled 1984 debut spawned the singles “Hand in Glove,” “This Charming Man,” and “What Difference Does it Make,” all of which made big impressions in the music press for guitarist Johnny Marr’s chiming guitar sound and Morrissey’s lush vocals with droll, evocative lyrics.
The band would find continuous presence on mix-tapes of artist youth through the release of follow-up LPs including 1985’s Meat is Murder and 1987’s The Queen is Dead.
Morrissey made his solo debut Viva Hate in 1988 and released 13 more LPs so far, most recently with 2020’s I am Not a Dog on a Chain.
The “Nude” tour was scheduled to wind through North and South America and in addition to dates in Canada and all across the U.S., he was scheduled to play Mexico City and Guadalajara in Mexico; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Santiago, Chile; Lima, Peru; and Bogota, Colombia.
