How to unlock Steel Soul mode in Silksong

While it’s unlikely that many Silksong players have been desperately searching for a way to make the Soulslike Metroidvania even harder, a method of achieving just that has been uncovered on the game’s title screen.

If you want to test your skills and try out the hardest difficulty in Hollow Knight: Silksong, here’s a complete guide on how to turn on Steel Soul mode, including what the mode entails and where to type in the code.

The Escapist recaps

Despite Silksong already being dubbed incredibly tricky by a large portion of the player base, the community has uncovered a secret code that unlocks an additional game mode called Steel Soul mode. This mode will be familiar to Hollow Knight fans as it was present in that game, too, albeit not with the same unlock method. Steel Soul mode is a brutal permadeath mode that locks players out of their save files if they die. There’s no opportunity to revive or try a boss fight again – if you accidentally run into an early-game mob or get lost and fall into spikes, that’s that. To unlock this mode, players must head to the Extras screen from the title screen and use their controller or keyboard to input a code. The screen will then flash and make a noise, indicating a successful unlock.

How to turn on Steel Soul mode in Silksong

Steel Soul mode is a permadeath setting that will send a chill down your spine if you played Hollow Knight. Steel Soul can be unlocked in Hollow Knight by completing the game for the first time, but there’s a different process for Hollow Knight: Silksong, requiring a secret code.

Head to the title screen and open up the Extras menu. Then, use your controller or keyboard to type in:up, down, up, down, left, right, left, right.

Once you’ve successfully typed in this code, the screen will flash up brightly for a moment to confirm this.

Now, whenever you go to start a new save file, you’ll have the option to choose between the Classic mode and Steel Soul.

If you’ve already finished both Hollow Knight and Silksong, Steel Soul is arguably the next best thing for you to try your hand at.

It’s brutally difficult, meaning that you’ll need to pay close attention when guiding Hornet through even the most innocuous of platforming sections or early-game bosses – but at least it gets rid of any annoying run-backs.

Steel Soul is Silksong’s permadeath mode that can be unlocked by inputting a code in the Extras menu, accessed from the title screen. It’s a max-level difficulty mode that’ll test even the most seasoned of Metroidvania lovers. At the time of writing, we’re unsure if there are other modes in Silksong, but this article will be updated if more are discovered.
