Discount store sells up as shoppers go to 'cheaper options in Aldi and Home Bargains'

The owners of a discount store in North Wales say they have made a decision to sell. Ruabon Discount Store has been run for more than 15 years – with them also hosting the Post Office.

But this week Minty, Chloe, and Stacey, who run the store, confirmed they were closing. They said they were not as busy as they once were – adding that they understood “people shop for cheaper options in places such as Aldi and Home Bargains”.

The final nail is the plan for Screw Fix to open in the local area as the store offers lots of DIY products. They said the store has been sold with plans for the Post Office and store to reopen.

A statement from Minty, Chloe, Stacey said: “As a lot of you have probably heard, we recently made the decision to sell RDS our family business. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox

“It’s something we have had to think about for a long time. We just aren’t as busy as we use to be and we understand people shop for cheaper options in places such as Aldi and Home Bargains.

“Also with the plans of Screw Fix coming locally it is the decision we had to make. We hope you understand our reasons as we have fully loved being apart of the village for 15+ years and we have made lots of lovely friends along the way.

“We close our doors for the last time on Wednesday 17th September. “Therefore Saturday 13th will be our last operating day for the Post office.

“There is new owners stepping in and will still be running the post office. “We are unsure of the time frame they will be opening in as there will be a refurb but I’m sure you will speak to them at some point.

“Thanks again to each and everyone of you who has fully supported us over the last 15 years. Minty, Chloe, Stacey and all the staff at RDS.”
