WASH stakeholders advocate scale-up of WSUP models to meet SDG 6

Stakeholders in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector are calling for the integration of Water & Sanitation for Urban Population’s (WSUP) successful models into broader urban development programmes.

They believe that embedding WSUP’s approaches into Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly (MMDA) development plans will help Ghana meet the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation.

The call was made during the launch of WSUP’s five-year (2025–2030) Ghana Business Plan at the Palms By Eagles Hotel in Accra.

The plan focuses on building capacity for local utilities and service providers, promoting inclusive and climate-resilient systems, ensuring financial sustainability, and integrating evidence-based models into wider urban development efforts.

Country Manager of WSUP, Mr Frank Ketty, said the programme aims to foster sustainable water and sanitation services in urban areas by unlocking finance and strengthening collaboration with government agencies and partners.

Madam Faustina Boachie, Chief Manager of Ghana Water Limited’s Low-Income Customers Department, highlighted the positive impact of WSUP’s partnership, noting that what began as a unit within the utility has now grown into a department. She said this growth has enabled thousands of low-income households to access safe water, in some cases at subsidised or free rates.

The 2025–2030 plan is centred on climate resilience, inclusion, financial viability, partnerships and innovation, with models such as container-based sanitation set to be scaled up for broader impact.
