Stree Star Abhishek Banerjee To Make His Theatrical Comeback With Solo Play, Tu Kya Hai

Abhishek Banerjee, known for his roles in films like Stree, Bhediya and Bala, is all set to mark his return to stage theatre after a long hiatus of 20 years. For his big return, the actor has reunited with his theatre group for a solo satirical comedy, titled Tu Kya Hai, which will be staged this month at Mumbai’s NCPA.
Notably, before making it to the OTT and films, Abhishek began his acting career with stage plays in New Delhi.
About Abhishek Banerjee’s Tu Kya Hai
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the play is a humorous take on the life of dreamers who leave the comforts of home to pursue careers as artists. Their paths, which are often filled with difficulties, struggles, and absurdity, blur the line between comedy and tragedy. Over time, these experiences evolve into stories that resemble a staged performance of life itself.
In this solo act, Banerjee focuses on his own journey, using humour and honesty to explore themes of ambition, society and self-esteem. Tu Kya Hai is divided into three chapters: living in a middle-class Indian household where art is often seen as a hobby; the hectic yet funny hustle of Mumbai’s entertainment business; and the quieter, more intimate problems that emerge in moments of solitude.
Abhishek Banerjee On His Return To Theatre
Speaking about his big return to theatre, the Stree 2 actor said, “The theatre is where I learnt to breathe as an artist. It taught me rhythm, sincerity, and how to fail fearlessly. For the past 20 years, my journey has been about chasing roles, creating stories, and establishing a career in film, but the stage kept pulling me back,” as quoted by Bollywood Hungama.
He added, “Tu Kya Hai is very personal since it reflects my life and, in many ways, anyone who has ever questioned themselves. It’s about the late-night whisper we all hear, Tu kya hai? when the lights are turned off and the applause has ended. Returning to the theatre to perform with my old theatre buddies feels like closing a circle, or perhaps beginning a new one. This is more than simply a play to me; it’s a homecoming.”
Abhishek Banerjee’s Upcoming Films
On the film front, Abhishek will be next seen in the courtroom drama film, Section 84, along with Amitabh Bachchan, Nimrat Kaur and Diana Penty in the leads. The official release date of the film is yet to be announced by the makers.
Besides this, he also has Imtiaz Ali’s production Side Heroes with Aparshakti Khurana and Varun Sharma, as well as Mirzapur: The Film with Pankaj Tripathi, Divyendu Sharma and Ali Fazal in his kitty.
