Picking up from last week’s column, my friend and fellow coworker, Steve Taylor and I attended the Auburn-Cord Duesenberg Festival held in Auburn, Indiana over the 2025 Labor Day weekend.
After the car show, we headed to the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, MI. Steve was there for the first time in 2024 and couldn’t wait to go there again! He had been told that it was a fantastic collection of vintage automobiles, set out in the country just outside Battle Creek, MI, the cereal capital of the United States.
Battle Creek was reminiscent of a time past, with beat-up cars, and noisy, boarded up buildings, one after the other. However, when we crossed the city limits into Hickory Corners, it was like we had just experienced a time-warp and were in another world. When we disembarked from the Acadia, I swear you could hear the grass growing!
Surrounded by corn fields on all sides, the museum included several buildings containing cars of all shapes, sizes and model years. There were classics to post war including sports cars, a race car or two and cars from the fifties, sixties and seventies.
The operators had built one building with replicated showrooms for certain marks that made you feel you were in a Buick, Cadillac or Lincoln dealer showroom.
The Gilmore is a place that would interest anyone who is into cars of all sorts. There is a fifties diner that made its way to the Gilmore on a railroad car. You can stop there and have lunch while taking a break from walking.
I echo the words of my friend Steve who said others had told him the Gilmore was a fantastic place but had no idea just how wonderful it was. It was truly amazing!
