The Dallas Cowboys got a much-needed win on Sunday against the New York Giants in Week 2. The reason for the Cowboys’ win was mainly due to what they did on the offensive side of the football. That includes kicker Brandon Aubrey, who many are now considering by far the best kicker in the NFL.
While he hasn’t been in the league for too long and perhaps doesn’t have as many accolades as some of the other kickers in the league, it’s tough to deny that he’s not the best in the world right now.
Could Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey Make NFL History?
The question for the Dallas Cowboys now becomes what they want to pay him when the time comes. While kickers don’t get a ton of money on the market, Aubrey could set himself up to be the highest-paid kicker in NFL history. When examining the situation, CBS Sports’ Joel Corry had some intriguing thoughts on how much he could land. He noted that Harrison Butker landed a fully guaranteed $20 million deal in free agency, and that Aubrey should get more than that.
“Aubrey would be justified in wanting to be the league’s first $7 million-per-year kicker given his exploits. The salary cap went from $255.4 million in 2024 to $279.2 million this year, which is a 9.32% increase. Butker’s contract adjusted for salary cap inflation is approximately $7 million per year. Getting $20 million fully guaranteed at signing shouldn’t be out of the question either…
“Dallas dragging its feet with Aubrey will be more costly especially if he keeps kicking like he has so far during his NFL career. Aubrey would be justified in targeting in excess of $7.5 million per year next offseason. The growth in the salary cap could be approaching close to 20% since Butker signed his deal. For example, under a $302.5 million 2026 salary cap, Butker’s contract is a little more than $7.575 million per year when the increase is taken into account,” he wrote.
Given what the Cowboys have done in the past with some of their other top free agents available, there are certainly questions about whether they want to pay Aubrey, obviously a kicker, as much as he’s looking for.
Brandon Aubrey Will Have Several Suitors
Aubrey’s value around the NFL is clear, and if the Dallas Cowboys don’t want to offer him the amount of money he’s looking for when the time comes, there will be another team around the league interested in doing so.
His accolades are starting to rack up, too, which will be all he needs to compare himself with the best in the league. According to the team, Aubrey is now one of seven Cowboys ever to win player of the week honors four or more times.
“Brandon Aubrey was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. It is his fourth Special Teams POTW honor, the most in franchise history.
“Aubrey also becomes the seventh Cowboy ever to win four-or-more Player of the Week awards, joining Emmitt Smith (10), Troy Aikman (six), Dak Prescott (six), Tony Romo (five), Michael Irvin (four) and DeMarcus Ware (four),” the team wrote.
The Cowboys have a bit of time before they have to figure out the contract with Aubrey, but hopefully, when the time comes, they’ll get something done.
