After missing multiple deadlines, the Noida International Airport (NIA) is set to be inaugurated on October 30, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu said on Wednesday. However, flight operations are expected to start only 45 days thereafter. This comes after the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security on Monday granted airside security clearance to NIA, which is a key step for obtaining the aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).Located in the Jewar area of Gautam Buddh Nagar district in western Uttar Pradesh, the greenfield airport is situated approximately 75 km from Delhi, becoming the second international airport in the national capital region (NCR) after Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Noida Airport is said to have more significance as a strategic airport with a focus on cargo operations than passenger flights, according to the aviation minister.Live Events”We are trying to push up the inauguration so that we can see it happen very soon. Right now, the date that we have decided is October 30, when we will have the inauguration and within 45 days, we can see the operations also start,” the minister told reporters during an event at the Hindon airport in neighbouring Ghaziabad.Naidu added: “…the airlines are very much excited to operate from the Jewar airport, also they feel that there is huge potential in that area. So I can see that at least 10 cities will be connected in the first phase from Jewar airport, as seen in discussions that are happening with the airlines”.The airport, being developed under a public-private partnership model, has faced several delays, the most recent in April 2025. According to a Times of India report, the facility is now preparing to handle low-visibility conditions from day one, as the fog season in north India begins late December.“NIA is being equipped with CAT-III infrastructure in its first phase, allowing safe aircraft operations even during poor visibility. Calibration and regulatory approvals are currently underway,” an airport spokesperson said.CAT-III certified runways enable landings in low visibility—CAT-IIIA when visibility is 300–175 metres and CAT-IIIB when it drops to 175–50 metres. DGCA is expected to test and certify these systems before operations begin. In its first phase, NIA will handle both domestic and cargo flights with a passenger capacity of 1.2 crore annually. Terminal 1 is planned to be nearly doubled to increase capacity to 3 crore passengers per annum (CPA). Future expansions include a second runway and terminal to raise capacity to 5 CPA and eventually 7 CPA.The Uttar Pradesh government has projected further expansion in the long term, with additional runways and terminals proposed, following a model similar to IGI Airport’s gradual growth after operations shifted from Safdarjung in 1962.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
