You know Late Show host Stephen Colbert.
But do you recall his 2000s-era alter ego, Stephen Colbert, the satirically ultra-conservative host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report?
Stephen dropped this persona back in 2015 when he left Comedy Central for CBS. Since then, he’s only appeared in this character once in 2016, after which he announced he would never do it again.
Thankfully, he appears to have changed his mind. Last night on The Late Show, Stephen slipped back into his old hyper-partisan shoes to deliver a segment titled “The Word: Shhhhhh,” sharply and sarcastically urging Americans to stop saying things that hurt Donald Trump’s feelings.

In the segment, Stephen said, “Usually, ladies and gentlemen, usually in the TV biz, if people are upset with you over something that you’ve said or done, the eyeballs in the advertising go somewhere else. That’s called capitalism. But in this ABC case, the FCC had no choice but to slap down the invisible hand of the market.”
He continued, “Now you might think, you might think the constitution coddlers out there argue that Americans are born with certain God given rights, like life and liberty, and of course, and of course, the pursuit of happiness. But what about the pursuit of Donald Trump’s happiness? And yes, it’s true, the words Donald Trump aren’t in the Constitution [yet], but ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, I can say they are, because I have freedom of speech.”
Stephen concluded the segment saying, “Just give up and stop saying anything that might upset the president. And if you think that’s a terrible idea, no, you don’t, and that’s The Word.”
In response, fans are so happy to see this version of Stephen Colbert again. One YouTube commenter wrote, “lol, he snapped back into that character like nothing, i love it.”
Another said, “Once Colbert ends, I think Stephen should reprise the Colbert Report character in an independent format & network,” referring to the upcoming end of Stephen’s run on The Late Show.
And another commenter simply said, “The legend returns.”
