Pohl drops bid for 1st District congressional seat

Chesterfield County Circuit Court Clerk Amanda Pohl announced Monday that she is dropping her bid to challenge U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman, R-1st, next year.
“As I examine my role in how to best serve the people of the First Congressional District, and given the crises in our local community of ICE detaining people trying to have their day in court, I’ve come to the decision that my efforts will be best focused on continuing my service to constituents as the Chesterfield County Circuit Court Clerk,” Pohl said in a statement.
“Today, I am announcing that I will end my campaign for Congress effective immediately. This is not a decision I’ve come to lightly or quickly, but I believe it is the right choice,” she added.
Pohl was one of 10 Democrats who had announced bids for the party’s nomination. In greater Richmond, the First District includes parts of Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield counties.
Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor, a Charlottesville native who entered the contest last week, picked up an endorsement Monday from Emily’s List, which works to elect Democratic women who support abortion rights.
Taylor previously announced endorsements from Democrats including U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine; Reps. Eugene Vindman, D-7th, Don Beyer, D-8th, and Suhas Subramanyam, D-10th; and former Govs. Ralph Northam and Terry McAuliffe.
