Things have been looking brighter for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex this year. Meghan is back on screens in her lifestyle show ‘With Love, Meghan’, while Harry got to spend some time with his father King Charles this month in an early sign of a possible reconciliation.
But they will find themselves at the butt of the joke again when the satirical puppet show returns on Friday. In promotional images released ahead of its airing, Meghan is seen with a bowl of flowers in a reference to her Netflix show, which has been panned by critics. And Harry’s puppet focuses on his thinning ginger hair and also pokes fun at his ears. The Duke and Duchess are no strangers to being targeted by comedy writers, most famously in 2023 when they were the focus of an episode of South Park.
Also featuring in the new Spitting Image, which airs on YouTube. Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande are other celebrities to get the puppet treatment, as is Harry’s father, King Charles.
From the world of politics, Donald Trump, Sir Keir Starmer, Benjamin Netanyahu, JD Vance, and Kim Jong Un will all feature. The return of the show comes amid a free speech row in the US where Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show has been axed after he made comments about Donald Trump’s reaction to the murder of Charlie Kirk.
Co-writer Al Murray said the debate vindicates the decision to air the programme on YouTube. He said: “It’s kind of remarkable that it’s happening and this is really why YouTube, to us, seems the best place for us to be, because there’s no one between us and the audience, in particular, which is his issue, if you want.”
Fellow writer Matt Forde reckons Mr Trump would “absolutely hate” his depiction on Spitting Image, adding: “He’s got such a thin skin. I think it’d drive him absolutely mad. I think he’d hate the way the puppet looks, the way it sounds, and he’d hate what we do with it.”A new episode of Spitting Image will be posted on its YouTube page at 8pm on Friday, September 19.
