Letter: Alaska Air strategy OK if Hawaiian Air survives

A writer bemoaned Hawaiian Air’s cancellation of flights to Boston, Fukuoka and Incheon (“Alaska Air sucking life out of Hawaiian,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 17). Airlines cut routes that are not profitable. Tourism from the Far East never recovered from COVID. The Boston flight is 10-12 hours long and requires a larger flight crew due to FAA regulations, extra personnel that can be used on other flights.

Hawaiian Airlines was in trouble and needed to merge with Alaska Airlines in order to survive. Let’s not forget what happened to Aloha Airlines. Mesa Air came in with predatory pricing, and locals purchased those cheap seats. Aloha couldn’t survive. We killed Aloha Airlines in 2008.

I will continue to fly Hawaiian Airlines no matter what. Why? Go to YouTube, search “Aloha Airlines final flight” and watch those videos. All those employees are trying to be strong, but it’s the end. Many of them were crying.

I don’t want to see Hawaiian Airlines disappear.
