Pedro Pascal and his sister Lux have discussed their childhoods, their dream roles and the beauty of playing transgender characters, in a rare joint interview.
The two actors spoke to Elle on Monday (15 September), with Pedro interviewing his sister about her role in Miss Carbón, a film following a trans woman as she becomes the first female coal miner in her Argentinian home town of Río Turbio.
Lux loved meeting Carlita, the woman on whom the story was based.
“She has this presence and this light in her eyes that actually make me want to cry because it’s so f*cking inspiring. I understand she is someone who has followed her heart throughout the hostility, and I was like, I want to be her,” Lux said, prompting her brother to respond: “In meeting her, you understood that your soul could go looking for her soul.”
Lux had control over how the narrative surrounding trans identity was portrayed, saying she was warmly received when she asked director Agustina Macri: “Can we not make it her sole focus? Can we not fetishise this? Can we focus on her humanness and her heart? There’s so much more there.”
It was “kind of degrading” when people assumed that she and Carlita had a lot in common simply because of their identities, she added, and the “dignity of transness is that we get to be different individuals, have different stories and connect through other places we have in common”.
Pedro has become well-known for supporting his sister and the wider transgender community, frequently speaking up for trans people and wearing LGBTQ+-themed clothing.
Speaking at the Fantastic Four film premiere in July, he said: “It’s important to protect people, especially those simply asking for the right to exist in bodies that belong to them and in the world that they never asked to be brought into.
“It’s a very, very small, vulnerable, inspiring, courageous and brave community that fills me with a lot of inspiration. Therefore, it’s very important to protect that. They would do that for us.”
Lux has praised her brother for “defending people [who] are marginalised”, and calling him “incredible”. She has also opened up about his support when she came out as trans, saying he was “as kind as we think he is” and telling The Hollywood Reporter: “What makes [Pedro] so fabulous is that he wears his humanity on his sleeve and doesn’t hide who he is.
“That’s the main lesson I’ve [learnt] from him: there’s no reason for me to hide who I am. And I think people are seeing that.”
