All-British world title fight ordered as Katie Taylor loses undisputed status

Katie Taylor has lost her undisputed champion status at super lightweight, opening the door for an all-British world title fight.

The WBC officially announced that Taylor, 25-1 (6) is now the ‘Champion Emeritus’, as she will be taking a break from fighting, and a world title clash will take place to decide who the full-time champion will be while Taylor decides on her future.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said: “She let us know that she plans to take some time away from the ring to attend to personal matters.

“The fight she was obligated to take was against Chantelle Cameron; by naming her Champion in Recess, we will order Sandy Ryan to fight Cameron to ratify the WBC super lightweight world title.”

Chantelle Cameron, 21-1 (6), picked up the WBC interim title by beating Elhem Mekhaled in 2024 and has since successfully defended it twice.

The Brit has been on the hunt for a trilogy fight with Taylor as they currently have one victory apiece over each other. Cameron pulled off an unlikely upset in May 2023, defeating Taylor and briefly becoming the undisputed super lightweight champion via a razor-thin majority decision.

Taylor would regain her titles in an equally as competitive and close rematch six months later, but has since refused Cameron a third fight in pursuit of the biggest fights in the twilight of her career, which led her to a trilogy fight with Amanda Serrano instead.

Taylor said of Cameron: “I think Chantelle has to see if she can sell out a 1,000-seat arena first. I don’t think she can sell out any stadium at all.

“I think I’ve made her more money than she really deserves, to be quite honest.”

It does not look as though Cameron will ever get a third fight with Taylor, as she looks to be approaching retirement, but a fight with Sandy Ryan, 8-3-1 (3), is something she will need to take very seriously.

Ryan is a tough former world champion at 147bs and will have a chip on her shoulder as she is still rebuilding from back-to-back defeats at the hands of Mikaela Mayer that saw her lose her WBO title.

The former WBO champion got back to winning ways in her last against Jade Grierson, claiming a lopsided unanimous decision earlier this month.
