Korle Bu has lost 300 skilled health professionals within a span of six months

The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has revealed that nearly 300 highly skilled and specialized health professionals departed from the facility between January and June 2025 in pursuit of better opportunities abroad.

This situation, which hospital officials have characterized as alarming, presents an increasing threat to healthcare delivery at Ghana’s leading referral center.

In an interview with Citi News on Thursday, September 18, Deputy Medical Director of Korle Bu, Dr. Harry Akoto, disclosed these figures during a needs assessment visit by the administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund—commonly referred to as Mahama Cares.

The needs assessment initiative is scheduled for a nationwide rollout to offer financial assistance to individuals suffering from chronic and non-communicable diseases that are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Dr. Akoto warned that without prompt interventions to enhance working conditions, compensation, and training opportunities, Ghana risks losing even more of its most experienced medical professionals to developed nations.

“When we analyze our data, we find that approximately 300 individuals have left between January and June of this year. These individuals are highly skilled and specialized.

“The issues are multifaceted; some stem from a poor work environment. However, the majority relate to compensation. People believe they can earn more elsewhere than they do here,” he elaborated.
