Poundland set to close two more Scottish stores as early as next week

Scotland has lost three Poundland stores this year amidst the firm’s restructuring plans. Now a couple more are set to join the growing list, with one closing within just over a week. The discounted high street chain is set to close its Dumbarton Road site in Glasgow, alongside six other locations across the UK, as part of its restructuring plan on Sunday, September 28. It will bring the total of Scots Poundland closures to five this year, with stores in Port Glasgow, Perth and Broxburn permanently shuttering within the last month. Meanwhile, it’s also been reported that the branch based in Dundee’s Wellgate Shopping Centre will also be closing, with staff pulling down the shutters for the final time on October 11. The latest round of closures will bring the firm’s total closures up to 68, with Poundland confirming that 58 are set to take place this year, reports the Scottish Sun. News of more Scots closures comes just after we recently reported that the discounter had made a U-turn regarding the closure of 11 stores following new negotiations with landlords. This included Irvine’s Rivergate Shopping Centre branch that was set to close on September 14, although it was confirmed to continue trading for the future after temporarily reclosing for a restock. The announcement came not long after the budget chain had narrowly avoided falling into administration after its rescue package was approved by the high court in August. New owners the Gordon Brothers, who bought Poundland for £1 from the Pepco Group, announced a wave of cost-saving measures to help win back customers by refocusing and simplifying its brand. Alongside the proposed 68 closures, the company also announced a wave of changes to help save costs that included scaling back its chilled section, while completely axing its frozen foods aisle. The Poundland website was also closed for online shopping on September 16, just two years after the service was first launched, with shoppers now only able to see what products they can buy in store. The Poundland Perks loyalty app was also retired on the same date, although any vouchers that have so far been earned will be valid for redemption in any Poundland store until January 15, 2026. However, there is some good news, as the firm announced the return of its famed ‘one-price’ model , while also introducing ‘dump bins’ in stores that feature a selection of popular products for just £1. The loss of a couple more Poundland stores joins a few closures that have hit the high street this year, with The Original Factory Shop already making five closures across the country, including its Nairn branch set to close on September 22. Meanwhile, Bodycare has also fully collapsed into administration this month, with the health and beauty chain closing down a total of 10 stores across Scotland in recent weeks.
