The UEFA Champions League 2025/26 group stage game between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid dished out a dramatic encounter as the hosts clinched a 3-2 win at Anfield.
Virgil Van Dijk’s stoppage-time winner gave Liverpool all points on offer, before Atletico head coach was shown red following his heated argument and confrontation with a fan who had been hurling abuses at the Argentine throughout the game.

“There has been insults the whole game, but well, the one who has to be calm is me, and endure everything, insults, gestures, and so on they insult you the whole game from behind and you can’t say anything, because I’m the coach,” the head coach said.
“In the same way we fight against racism, we should address this because we don’t have a right to respond, and it’s not easy to be insulted throughout the match,” he added.
“My reaction to the insult is not justifiable, but you don’t know what 90 minutes of insulted without stopping is,” the 55-year-old said.
“And of course, with the goal of the opposition, you turn around and they continue to insult you and with the tension what happens, happens. The referee? He told me that he understood me, but hopefully Liverpool can improve it and if they identify who did that, it will have its consequences,” the Argentine added.
