Derek Cornelius has offered Rangers fans a taster of what he’ll be bringing to Ibrox with a stunning free-kick against Wales. Russell Martin signed the Canadian international on a season-long loan deal from Marseille on transfer deadline day. And the 27-year-old defender immediately headed off to join up with his international squad before linking up with his new Gers teammates. And if any of them are watching Canada’s international friendly against Wales in Swansea, they’ll have been seriously impressed by the set piece technique he has in his locker. He gave the visitors the lead with a wonderful effort five minutes before the break, sending an unstoppable strike past Adam Davies from over 25 yards out. Cornelius could make his Rangers debut against Hearts at Ibrox this weekend. And he’s been backed to be a big success in Glasgow by Canada coach Ewan Sharp after joining fellow Canuk Alistair Johnston in the city . He told the Herald: “It’s going to be exciting for us to see how he does in Scotland. But personally I think he’ll do well. “Derek is a good player and a good guy. He’s very good on the ball, has a nice left foot. “It’s always a challenge for players when they step into an atmosphere like Ibrox, but Derek’s experienced that with his previous clubs and with his country. Marseille is one of the toughest places to play in France. “Derek is thinking about the World Cup. He wants to play regularly, to challenge and push himself and he felt that a move to Rangers would be good for him. “I think he will be prepared for the kind of challenge it is at Rangers. He also won the Swedish title at Malmo before he moved to Marseille. So it shouldn’t be daunting for him. “When things are difficult and you’re not winning games, it’s always hard for the players. If they make a mistake or have a tough game, it becomes a challenge. “But something we have talked about as a group as we’ve prepared for the World Cup is the need to be honest. It’s how you respond in those moments that is important. Derek has already shown that he’s resilient. “He’s definitely had experience of that. It bodes well for him when he goes to Ibrox and plays for Rangers. “At Rangers, there will be a mix of games. In some games they’re going to have more of the ball and teams are going to try to play on the counter against them. “I think Russell Martin wants Derek to play out from the back and break lines. But he’s also able to play aggressively and use his athleticism and defensive skills to put out fires as well. “I’ve spoken to Derek and he’s excited about going to the club. He spoke with Russell and other people at Rangers and he felt they were really keen to get him in, really excited about adding him to the squad. “He felt a lot of love from them and was excited about the opportunity he was going to get there. They felt he would be a big part of their team this season.”
