Mumbai's Atal Setu Surface Damage Caught In Viral Video; Contractor Fined Rs 1 Crore

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) imposed a penalty of Rs 1 crore after a video went viral showing surface damage on the newly opened Atal Setu.
The video shared by on social media site X by an account named @Roads_of_India appeared to show surface damage in certain parts of the stretch. News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.
The MMRDA held the contractor accountable, according to the Times of India, who first reported the development, and also highlighted that exceptionally heavy rainfall and continuous traffic flow during the monsoon also played a role.
The Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, is India’s longest sea bridge at 21.8 km, with 16.5 km stretching over the sea. Opened in 2024, it connects Sewri in South Mumbai to Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai, cutting travel time between the two to just 15–20 minutes. Built at a cost of nearly ₹18,000 crore and named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the bridge also provides faster access to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The newspaper said that TATA Projects Daewoo JV was responsible for the 7.8 km portion of the bridge from Shivaji Nagar in Navi Mumbai to the mid-sea.
The development authority told ToI that minor damage was observed at three spots. The spots were near kilometres 11, 15 and 16 marks on the Navi Mumbai–bound carriageway.
They highlighted that immediate repairs, resurfacing longer stretches with bitumen instead of patchwork and steps like using mastic asphalt to keep the carriageway safe under wet conditions were initiated.
“Once the monsoon ends and hot mix plants resume operations, permanent resurfacing will be carried out with high-grade dense bituminous macadam (DBM) and asphalt concrete (AC) layers, strictly as per specifications. This will provide long-lasting riding comfort and durability,” MMRDA said in a statement to the newspaper.
