Five dead, 12 injured in fatal Cape Coast–Accra highway collision

A deadly accident on the Cape Coast–Accra Highway near Wakrom Junction has left five people confirmed dead and 12 others injured.

The collision occurred on Monday, September 15, 2025, when a DAF truck loaded with 700 bags of rice (registration number AW 9548-13) collided with a Toyota Hiace passenger vehicle (registration number GC 9728-21).

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) dispatched its Rescue Team from the Central Regional Headquarters to the scene at 2:45 p.m., arriving 14 minutes later. Firefighters found several victims trapped in the mangled vehicle. Tragically, five victims were extracted, with four pronounced dead at the hospital. One person remains critically injured and is receiving treatment.

Before the GNFS arrived, bystanders and other emergency responders had already rescued nine passengers, rushing them to the hospital. The total number of casualties stands at 17, with five dead and 12 injured. The driver and mate of the DAF truck survived the crash unscathed.

Rescue operations are still underway to free one person who remains trapped in the wreckage. The accident caused significant traffic delays on the busy highway as emergency teams worked to clear the scene. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while traveling along the route.
